Everyone in the Psychology Department is excited to begin a new academic year. We want to welcome our new students, as well as our returning majors, minors, and students in concentrations.
You will notice a few changes in the Department this year. First, we have two new faculty members joining us this year: Dr. Athena Buckthought (cognitive neuroscience) and Dr. Laura Mills-Smith (developmental psychology). Please give them a warm welcome when you return. Second, you may noticed some upgrades to the classrooms, new hallway furniture, and our new Student Computer Lounge across from the elevator.

On Saturday, April 9th, Alumni of the Psychology department came together to share stories and partake in fun activities. This year, more alumni showed up than ever! Alumni entered into contests and trivia games as well. Peter Hill ’65 was the alumni who graduated the longest time ago, Kelly Paton ’12 traveled over 1000 miles, and Lauren Kennedy ’14 won our trivia games!

On February 9, the Psychology Department, Psi Chi, RCPA, and Dr. Pranzarone hosted a Valentine’s Day event in which the psychology of love, love maps, lust, and limerence were discussed! The lecture was a blast and all had a great time crafting Valentine’s Day cards for the local nursing home residents.

You are invited to attend the next VTCRI Distinguished Public Lecture by Marie Bernard, M.D., on Thursday, December 10 at 5:30 PM in room M203 at the VTC on, “Can We Live to 100? New Evidence from the National Institute on Aging.” Dr. Bernard is the Deputy Director of the National Institute of Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Bernard is a charter fellow and past president of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education; she has received the Tibbitt’s award from the Association of gerontology for outstanding contributions to gerontology and gerontology education; and she has served on the board of directors of the international longevity center. She has been repeatedly recognized among the best doctors in America. Prior to serving as the Deputy Director of NIA, she was the Reynolds Chair of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Dr. Bernard has played major roles and served in leadership positions in identifying programs and policies to promote healthy aging, in the identification, treatment and care of adults with dementias, in comparative effectiveness research, and in identifying and growing the workforce for healthcare for older Americans. Dr. Bernard’s own research program has addressed issues of medication and healthcare management as well as nutrition for the elderly as well as workforce training and education.
The public lecture will be preceded by an open reception in the VTC café at 5:00 PM. Come out if you can!

On the Thursday before midterm exams began RC Psychology Association and Psi Chi, with support from Zentangle Inc., hosted a Zentangle: De-stress & Refocus event for students at the college. Psychology students could earn research credit and Honors program students could earn class I credit for attendance. More than 35 students came out to Zentangle! During the event, students heard about the technique known as Zentangle (https://www.zentangle.com/) and created their own Zentangle square. Additionally, the students left the session with a Zentangling pen and a couple squares so they could continue Zentangling on their own as they geared up for midterms. Everyone seemed to enjoy the session, so we hope to have Sacil back on campus in the future for another de-stressing and refocusing event!

During lunch and dinner hours outside of Commons this week, Psi Chi will be having a fundraising event! For just $1, students will have the opportunity to guess how much candy is in a jar (with the help of some psychology related clues). The student who guesses correctly wins the entire jar!
Students are allowed to donate more than once, thus allowing for multiple guesses! All proceeds will go towards the Psi Chi chapter here at Roanoke.

Free the Girls is a nonprofit that collects new or gently used bras to help women build up an inventory for a micro-business. It is really simple way to help support women in developing countries by enabling them to establish a sustainable economy.

Next week, the Education Job Fair will take place in the Wortmann Ballroom on Wednesday, February 4th from 9am-3pm. One of the many employers that will be on campus that day is TAP: Total Action for Progress.
TAP’s mission is to help “individuals and families achieve economic and personal independence through education, employment, affordable housing, and safe and healthy environments.” TAP’s goal is provide everyone with an equal opportunity for economic development and obtaining the American way of life. TAP offers over 30 different programs for Education & Career Development, Business & Economic Development, and Housing & Community Scholars.
TAP offers many regular entry-level jobs that Psychology, Teacher Licensure Program, Sociology, and Spanish majors would qualify for. There will be a representative at this event for graduating seniors. The representative will be looking to fill positions that teacher licensure candidates many wish to fill. The representative will not be conducting formal interviews, but an informal interview where you can ask more questions about the opportunity and TAP.
It is recommended that you bring your resume along with you to meet the representative. Business attire is not required, however very nice business casual attire is recommended.

3 Reservation for the Etiquette Dinner Workshop must be made in Career Services no later than MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16. Students on the college meal plan must pay a $4 fee, while non-meal-plan students must pay $8 for this workshop. Maroon Card may be used for this purpose at the Cashier’s desk in College hall, or cash or check may be used in Career Services. Bring receipt for payments made at the Cashier’s desk to Career Services to complete your registration.
On Friday, January 30th, Dr. Nichols will be conducting a workshop in which you can learn how to review manuscripts for publication. The workshop will take place in Life Science 502 @ 3pm.
This workshop will help you to distinguish how strong a manuscript is, if it is appropriate for publication, and if the manuscript makes a significant scientific contribution amongst many other areas.
This workshop will specifically help those who have intentions on pursuing graduate school. Come on by and learn how to review a manuscript and potentially improve your own writing!

Large health care organizations offer a variety of opportunities for employment, internships, and research to students in many majors – Business, social sciences, and healthcare related fields. Come and hear from one of our local health care systems – Carilion Clinic – about such opportunities, as this could be useful in looking for similar settings in other locations. Registration is required by Thursday, October 30, through Career Services. This program takes place off-campus and includes dinner at no cost. Rides are available if desired or needed. Dr. Chris Buchholz, associate professor in Roanoke’s Psychology Department, spoke about the Science of Love. It was well attended by RCPA members.
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Denise Friedman has become the new chairperson for the Department of Psychology.
Dr. Friedman joined the department in 2007. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Averett University with a B.S. in Psychology. She earned a M.S. (2004) and Ph.D. (2006) from Virginia Tech where she specialized in Developmental and Biological Psychology. She is a member of Alpha Chi and Phi Kappa Phi. Her research interests include cognitive and frontal lobe development from infancy through early adulthood. Her current research program examines the impact of technology on cognitive and social skills.
The psychology department graduated 50 students receiving their B.A. and 14 receiving their B.S this year. We also had 7 students receive honors in the major and 8 inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. I can’t help but think how proud Dr. Curt Camac would be of these achievements.

This award is given annually to the student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in the human development concentration and has shown potential for continued success in the field of developmental psychology.
Yuki Yamazaki! Yuki was the VP of Psi Chi this year. As such, she organized a number of events, including service activities and induction.
The Roanoke College Chapter of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in psychology, selects from its membership a student who has best exemplified excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. A gift and certificate are given by Psi Chi.

The psychology major who has the highest overall grade point average (a minimum of 3.2 is required) after completion of at least 27 units is designated as the Senior Scholar in Psychology.
Julia Boudrye. Julia is recognized for her scholarship. She has been a member of Dr. Friedman’s lab and the URAP program for four years. She has presented at a number of conferences, regional and national, has completed research practicums, independent studies, and honors in the major. Additionally, she has served as the lab coordinator for the past year.

Chava Urecki. Chava has been a member of Dr. Buchholz’s lab and the URAP program for the last four years. She has been lab manager for the past two years, conducting her own independent research and overseeing underclassmen. She has presented at several conferences and recently defended her honors thesis!
The faculty selects a psychology major to receive the Karl W. Beck Memorial Prize, which is given for excellence in psychology. The recipient is awarded a prize of money, which is made possible by gifts of friends in memory of the late Dr. Karl W. Beck, professor and first chairperson of the Roanoke College Psychology Department. The recipient’s name is engraved on a plaque which is located in the department reception room.
